Home > Bali Beach Hotel Historical Journey
Stands tall as a tribute to history, celebrating the visionary roots that shaped Indonesia’s hospitality.
Embracing echoes from the past, this cherished sanctuary welcomes the revival of a rich legacy, intertwining threads of heritage and tradition into a renewed splendor.
In the early 1960s, a quiet meeting between President Soekarno and the Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur became the spark that ignited Bali’s journey into global tourism. Le Mayeur, who had made his home in Sanur, was known for his evocative paintings capturing the beauty and soul of Balinese life. His art moved Soekarno deeply—not just as a statesman, but as a lover of culture and a visionary.
In 1962, he took a bold step toward that dream by initiating the construction of the Bali Beach Hotel, strategically located beside Le Mayeur’s residence. It would become the first international-standard hotel in Bali, & a symbol of Indonesia’s readiness to welcome the world.
Bali Beach Hotel was officially inaugurated on November 1, 1966, by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX. Although President Soekarno was the visionary behind the hotel’s creation, he was not present at the inauguration. In fact, he never had the opportunity to stay there, as he was under house arrest at Wisma Yaso during his final years. Bali Beach Hotel holds the distinction of being the first international-standard hotel in Bali and remains the only hotel on the island permitted to exceed 15 meters in height, standing at nine stories tall.
In 1979, the hotel was officially renamed Bali Beach Hotel and placed under the management of PT Hotel Indonesia International (HII), a state-owned enterprise established to professionalize the management of Indonesia’s prominent hospitality properties.
This marked a pivotal transition, with a renewed focus on elevating service standards and positioning the hotel as a symbol of Indonesian pride in the tourism sector.
In the early 2000s, a strategic merger between PT Hotel Indonesia International and PT Natour was initiated to consolidate state-owned hospitality assets. This merger aimed to unify management, streamline operations, and build a cohesive national hotel brand.
As a result, the hotel was rebranded as Inna Grand Bali Beach Hotel, aligning with the “Inna” brand shared across the network. It later underwent a name refinement to become Grand Inna Bali Beach Hotel, continuing its journey as a heritage icon along the shores of Sanur.
In 2021, the hotel is in a restoration process to become the only 10-story beachfront building in Bali with 273 Rooms and suites facing the pristine Sanur Beach ocean.
Bali Beach Hotel has become a part of the Heritage Hotel Collection of Injourney – a state-owned company of the Indonesian Government that aspires to be a living tribute to Indonesia’s unity in diversity, fostering an environment where history thrives, traditions flourish, and guests become part of an enduring legacy
